Despite the fact that Alice Springs in Australia is one of the driest places on earth, the local regatta, Henley-on-Todd, has been held annually there for almost 40 years. In bottomless vessels, crews race along the dry riverbed of the Todd River in yachts, whitewater kayaks and even battle boats armed with water cannons and flour mortars. And, if this was not unusual enough, there are even waterskiing, surf rescue and boogieboarding competitions that take place, despite the obvious lack of water.
