If someone would ask you what good the humble mosquito has brought to this planet, you would probably be stuck for an answer. That is unless you are a resident of Clute, Texas, a town which holds the world’s only Annual Mosquito Festival.
At the end of July, the town welcomes visitors to participate in activities such as the Mosquito Chase (a 5km run), the Mosquito Legs beauty contest and the highly unusual Mosquito Calling competition.
There are also more typical events like horseshoe pitching, a fajita cook-off, and bingo. All-in-all, it is a fun day out for all the whole family to celebrate this oft overlooked insect.
Unfortunately, in the rest of the world mosquitos remain a pest. But while we can’t ward of itchy bites, at least you won’t have to worry about being stung by high roaming charges while you are abroad!
